1095 Avenue of the Americas is the name and address of a skyscraper in New York City in the Manhattan borough . The building is also known as the Verizon Building . Construction on Bryant Park began in 1972 and was completed in 1974. The high-rise has a height of 192 meters with 40 floors above ground and was designed by the architects Kahn & Jacobs . The tower was designed as the headquarters for New York Telephones .
In 2006, the entire facade, which is similar to Two New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan because of the vertical black and white structure , was replaced by a dark green glass facade. The renovation work took over a year and in 2007 the high-rise was able to reopen. At the same time the name was changed to 1095 Avenue of the Americas. Since then, a large part of the 120,000 m² office space has belonged to the insurance company MetLife . Verizon's headquarters are also located there .
With the green glass facade and a height of 192 m, which is similar to that of the neighboring WR Grace Building , the Verizon Building fits in well with the overall context. Due to its proximity to popular Bryant Park and the New York Public Library , the building is often inadvertently brought into view. In 2009 the Bank of America Tower opened one block north .
