2K Australia (founded as Irrational Games Australia ) was a development studio of computer and video games based in Canberra , Australia .

history

The three former Looking Glass Studios employees Ken Levine , Jonathan Chey and Robert Fermier founded the Irrational Games developer studio in Boston , Massachusetts in 1997 . In 2000, the Irrational Games Australia branch was founded in Canberra , Australia . The Boston-based studio, under the direction of Levine, mainly took care of the design and storytelling, while in Australia, under the direction of Chey, the focus was on the technology and level design .

Work on BioShock began in 2004 . At the beginning of 2006, Take 2 Interactive took over both studios and incorporated them into his label 2K Games . Just eleven days before BioShock was released , Take 2 Interactive renamed the studios 2K Boston and 2K Australia. That same year, 2K Marin was founded in Novato , Marin County , California with a few people who had worked on BioShock . From then on, 2K Marin and 2K Australia worked together on BioShock 2 . In April 2010, 2K Australia was integrated into 2K Marin, but without giving up one of the two development locations in Canberra and Novato. In the same month a reboot of the X-COM series was announced, which was to be created by the newly formed 2K Marin. In November 2011, 2K Australia was spun off from 2K Marin and from then on worked on BioShock Infinite together with Irrational Games, which has operated under its old name since 2010 .

In October 2014, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was the studio's last major title. On April 16, 2015, it was finally announced that the development studio was being wound up. The closure was justified with excessive operating costs in Australia.
