action

A man named Ernie is left with his car in the desert. He waits impatiently for help. But no vehicle stops. Shortly before dawn, the successful talent agent Anthony stops and takes him to the gas station 30 miles away so that Ernie can drive back in the tow truck.

Right at the beginning Ernie shows his pistol, but Anthony takes it from him immediately to be on the safe side. On the drive, they both talk about baseball and their family circumstances. It turns out that Ernie has a rich father, but he doesn't want to know anything about him. In between he keeps writing in his diary in the car. Completely unexpected, it also makes a very crazy impression at times. After a little argument, Ernie gets out, but Anthony waits for him to get back in. Arrived at the gas station, Anthony gives Ernie money. But he confesses that his car is not defective, only the tank is empty. He was too embarrassed to say that. He asks Anthony to drive him back to the car with gas cans. After some discussion, he agrees. On the way back, Anthony tells, among other things, that he shot two drunken thugs 25 years ago before they could kill his friend Jimmy. Jimmy posed as a shooter at the time to protect Anthony's life and died a little later in prison.

When they get back to Ernie's car one night, Anthony fills the tank with petrol, but the car still doesn't run. Then he calls the automobile club. Suddenly Ernie points the gun at Anthony and wants his car keys. He can overwhelm him and shoots Ernie. He drags the body into the thicket and drives away.

After discovering a letter in the passenger seat, he stops. The letter is from Ernie, whose real name is Paul and explains everything to him in it. His father had bequeathed him a fortune, which he lost completely through bad investments. He can no longer guarantee his wife a decent life and feels like a failure. The $ 500,000 life insurance taken out does not pay in the event of suicide. That's why he had planned everything that way and finally thanks Anthony.

criticism

“Chamber play-like two-person piece in the form of a road movie that encompasses several classic genres; well played, but not completely convincing. "

“A road movie chamber play with two people leaves the impartial viewer puzzling for a long time as to whether he is witnessing a drama about shattered bourgeois dreams and subliminally smoldering racial conflicts, a particularly subtle buddy comedy or a creeping horror trip. Somehow it is a bit of everything and by no means the usual genre stew, which is why the well-played low-budget production can be recommended with a clear conscience to everyone who is looking for that "special film".
