The Freizeithaus am Mauerpark in the buildings of the former 89th and 96th community school is located at Schwedter Straße 232-234 in the Rosenthaler Vorstadt in the far north of the Berlin district of Mitte .

The former school buildings are listed as a complete system with the number 09011310 in the Berlin State Monument List .

architecture

The boys' school was built from 1876 to 1877 according to plans by city building officer Hermann Blankenstein . Their design is typical of Berlin community schools in the last quarter of the 19th century. It consists of two four- story clinker - clad class wings and a single- story gym wing . The wall surfaces of both buildings are horizontally structured by molded stone cornices , terracotta giants and brick strips. Decorative elements were only used very sparingly in order to make the building structure clearer. The main entrance in the central projection of the street building has a simple terracotta roof. The gym, which is also kept simple, has a solidly crafted, coffered wooden beam ceiling.

Todays use

A branch of the Wilhelm-Busch-Sonderschule was housed in the rear building until summer 2004 , since then artists from the Ateliergemeinschaft Milchhof e. V. drafted. The floors in the street building are used by various children's and youth institutions, including the Kinderring Berlin eV has its office here. In 2008 and 2009, extensive renovation measures were carried out with funds from the monument subsidy, which included a repair of the facades, a renewal of the sanitary facilities and a complete renovation of the gym.
