At the end of the 1820s, the Royal Bank of Scotland had its administrative headquarters in Glasgow on Exchange Square . At the beginning of the 1850s, this administrative center was to be expanded. To this end, a new building was added at the rear, which was then spatially on Buchanan Street. The Scottish architect Charles Wilson was responsible for the design of the building, which was completed in 1851 .

In 1873 the counter hall was redesigned by Peddie & Kinnear . The building was modernized and expanded by Burnet & Boston at a point in time between 1939 and 1947 that has not been passed down exactly . After a fire in 1968 partially destroyed the interior, it was redesigned. The building has been the subject of four specialist architectural publications since its creation.

The three-story building is on Buchanan Street in central Glasgow. It is designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance . The west-facing front facade along Buchanan Street is seven axes wide. The masonry consists of blocks of yellow sandstone . The windows above the ornamented architrave suspect the simple cornices on consoles with relief . The facade closes with a frieze , tooth cut and cornice . The six-axis-wide side facades are designed analogously. In the 20th century, the building was connected to the rear building via a three-axis connecting structure.
