A0620−00 ( V616 Monocerotis ) is an X-ray nova in the constellation Unicorn that contains a black hole .

The binary star system consists of the black hole and a star of the spectral class K, similar to the sun. First, the masses were determined to be 11.0 ± 1.9 solar masses for the black hole and about 0.7 solar masses for the companion. A later work, however, determines the masses only to be 6.6 and 0.4 solar masses.

In most cases of previously known systems of this type, the star is large, massive and bright. It is not known whether the K-class star existed next to the star that created the black hole or is a remnant of a supernova . The black hole itself is surrounded by an accretion disk that emits X-rays . A0620−00 is one of the closest black holes to the Sun that we know about, at a distance of around 3500 light years .

There were two outbursts of brightness in the 20th century, in 1917 and 1975. The latter could be observed with an X-ray telescope. The emitted X-rays were more than 100,000 times as strong as normal.
