The A288 is a Class I road established in 1923 between Hilsea , a borough of Portsmouth , and Southsea Common, Portsmouth. It branches off from the A3 and runs through then largely undeveloped area to the English Channel coast in Eastney , a district of Portsmouth. From there, a westerly course takes place as the road closest to the coast to Pier Road . It goes around the Southsea district to the south. It came to an end there in 1923 on the A2011 road . The road lies entirely in the county of Hampshire. In 1935 the A2011 was added to it.
