The A978 road is an A-road in Scotland . It is part of a ring around downtown Aberdeen .

At the northern end of the A978 at a roundabout along the A956 in a westerly direction. As St Machar Drive it leads through the district of Old Aberdeen past the University of Aberdeen . At a roundabout, the A978 crosses the A96 ( Inverness –Aberdeen) and leads first as Leslie Road , then as Hilton Road in a south-westerly direction to the junction with the A9012. The A978 runs south as Westburn Drive , joins the A9011 and crosses the A944 ( Alford –Aberdeen). Crossing the B893 and B9119, the road turns increasingly to the southeast. After a total length of 4.6 km, the A978 ends when it joins Union Street .
Surroundings
Along the street are three buildings from the highest Scottish monument category A. The Old Aberdeen Town House, dating from 1788, is located in the middle of the university buildings on St Machar Drive. In Westburn House is a mansion in the 1830s. It is located in the middle of Westburn Park , one of six parks in central Aberdeen, which borders the A978. On the opposite side is Victoria Park, the oldest park in the Rosemount district . In the middle of the complex is a granite fountain with an octagonal floor plan. It is one of the earliest works by John Bridgeford Pirie . The A978 ends with Union Street on one of Aberdeen's main shopping streets.
