The 1988/89 season was the third and final regular season of the All-American Hockey League . During the regular season, the five teams played between 28 and 36 games. In the play-offs, the Miami Valley Sabers prevailed and became champions of the AAHL for the first time.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Carolina Thunderbirds moved to the East Coast Hockey League .
- The Johnstown Chiefs moved to the East Coast Hockey League.
- The Port Huron Clippers stopped playing.
- The Virginia Lancers moved to the East Coast Hockey League.
- The Lincoln Park Patriots were added to the league as an expansion team.
- The Springfield Capitols were added to the league as an expansion team.
