The DE-AC33C is a diesel-electric locomotive for heavy goods traffic. It was developed by ADtranz in collaboration with the US company General Electric . At Deutsche Bahn AG , the locomotives are run under the 250 series. The series was marketed under the name “Blue Tiger”.
history
The locomotive comes from the Blue Tiger locomotive family, which was originally intended as a platform. At the end of 2004 it was approved for driving on steep sections in Germany. After two more locomotives had been built based on the technology of the prototype for railways in Asia, at the beginning of 2005 Bombardier announced that it would only produce larger order quantities of locomotives and that another active application in favor of its own development based on the TRAXX - Family foreseen. A total of one demonstrator (prototype), ten locomotives for the German market, 30 locomotives for Pakistan and 20 locomotives for Malaysia were built.
construction
The locomotive has a medium-speed 12-cylinder diesel engine with 2460 kW / 3345 hp and three-phase AC technology from General Electric . These components come from other successful locomotive designs by the American company. The Henschel Flexifloat bogies and the mechanical design of the locomotive were brought into the partnership by Adtranz. Each wheel set of the locomotive is equipped with an air-cooled IGBT inverter , and it also has a computer-controlled diagnostic system.
commitment
The prototype, which was once painted blue-gray and provided with a tiger motif, was initially used by BASF, later by Mindener Kreisbahnen, and finally sold to Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen AG (OHE). When the deadline for the locomotive and with it the special approval as a prototype vehicle ran out, extensive modifications were necessary in order to be able to continue using the machine. In addition to reinforcing the front of the vehicle with welded-on steel beams, the locomotive also received a rotating grille on the sides.
Locomotives of this type are used in Germany exclusively by private railway companies, such as the Havelländische Eisenbahn (HVLE) Berlin or the ITL Dresden. Previously, the majority of the locomotives were organized in a rental pool from the manufacturer Bombardier after the first major customer, the KEG , withdrew from the purchase with reference to the delayed approval. A series of tests carried out in January 2005 by the Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB AutoZug caused a sensation , which had its car trains pulled by a class 250 locomotive for a few days.
The locomotives are currently divided as follows:
- Havelländische Eisenbahn AG
