AJ Maddah

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arash "AJ" Maddah is an Australian concert and festival organizer.

biography

Maddah was born in Iran but immigrated to Australia with his family . He worked with Ken West on the Big Day Out , but both no longer work together. In 2004 he organized the Soundwave Festival for the first time and was also responsible for the Warped Tour in Australia. In 2013, Maddah was named the Most Influential Person on the National Music Scene by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA).

The end of the Soundwave Festival

In December 2015 it was announced that the Soundwave Festival would not take place in 2016 for financial reasons. The main reason is bad ticket sales. However, it was later revealed that Maddah was unable to pay all fees for several artists who played at the festival in 2015. The fees for Slipknot , Soundgarden and the Smashing Pumpkins alone were worth almost AUD 5 million in debt. The British metal band Monuments , which was also not paid out, had to start a crowdfunding campaign because it suffered a severe financial loss. The group is still grappling with the consequences , according to a report by the UK Guardian . In total, almost six months after the Soundwave 2015 took place, over 50 artists were not paid or only partially paid. On December 4, 2015 before the cancellation of the music events, opened American Express a bankruptcy lawsuit at the Federal Court of Australia . Due to the cancellation of the festival, a dispute broke out between the organizer Maddah and the ticket seller Eventopia regarding the reimbursement of costs . Both Maddah and the company refused to pay the expense. Eventopia later announced a notice that they would pay for the refund and sue Maddah for damages .

criticism

His former colleague and interim competitor Ken West described Maddah in 2012 as a "financial anarchist who doesn't care about the Australian music scene".

Vivian Lees, who also worked with Maddah for the Big Day Out , accused him of having financially abused the Big Day Out for the benefit of the Soundwave Festival. He sold his shares in the festival to the American company C3 Presents in order to flush money into the coffers of the Soundwave. Maddah denied these rejections.

James Purtill wrote in a chronology at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the collapse of the Soundwave Festival could mark the end of the era for festival tours in Australia .
