AMD network e. V. operates as a non-profit association an independent medical-social network to improve the care of those affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The partners of the AMD network include a. Professional associations of ophthalmologists and opticians , eye clinics, federal and state associations for self-help and rehabilitation teachers, health insurance companies and professional development institutions. It is one of the intersectoral networks in the health sector.

Emergence

The network was founded in 2011 on the initiative of the economist Heribert Meffert , who suffers from AMD himself, and Daniel Pauleikhoff, head ophthalmologist in the eye clinic at the St. Franziskus Hospital in Münster . Up to October 1, 2014, both of them provided the association's board of directors with the right to represent, on which date Meffert switched to the board of trustees, his successor on the board is the ophthalmologist Klaus-Dieter Lemmen. The establishment was preceded by a needs analysis, the results of which are documented in two doctoral theses. One goal should be to help doctors do marketing to meet the needs of their particular patient population.

In the first year, the network participated as a co-organizer in the 4th interdisciplinary low-vision congress in Essen, a specialist conference on the subject of visual impairments in order to promote communication and networking. Since 2014, the AMD network has been active nationwide after a three-year pilot phase with regional restriction to the North Rhine-Westphalia area . This is also reflected in the deletion of "NRW" from the club name.

Objectives and priorities

The aim of the AMD network is to maintain the quality of life of those affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The association pursues this objective with the three main areas of information , networking and research .

The association uses various instruments in the area of information. The company's own internet platform offers extensive information on the disease, how to deal with a visual impairment , and an online forum in which those affected can exchange ideas with one another but also seek advice from an ophthalmologist. In addition, the association offers appropriate advice for those affected and their families via a telephone hotline . Another instrument of the association is the individual patient handout , which the association makes available to ophthalmologists. With the online tool, ophthalmologists can use the online tool to create and print out individual information on the disease for those affected, including the addresses of care providers, and to give them to those affected to supplement the patient consultation.

The address directory (formerly “supply atlas”), an address database of utilities throughout Germany, belongs to the area of information as well as networking . This includes addresses of ophthalmologists, certified opticians , rehabilitation teachers , independent advice centers , self-help groups and other offers.

Networking strengthens those active in AMD care, coordination and cooperation in order to guarantee holistic care. For networking, the AMD network provides specific information for the utilities, holds specialist events on various topics and refers inquiring utilities to additional contacts in the regional area.

In the area of research, the AMD network participates in large health care studies and also independently conducts studies and pilot projects on AMD health care. In addition, the AMD network developed under a health care research projects for medical and social care within their own development. In Meffert's opinion, findings from the barrier-free access to information, quality management in patient care and the analysis of the effectiveness of awareness- raising campaigns can also be applied to other diseases.

meaning

Meanwhile, the offer of the AMD network is widespread, especially among those affected and their relatives. The networking of the association with professional associations, self-help associations and many other actors is reflected in the level of awareness of the AMD network in specialist circles. The importance for patient education is also evident in the intensive use of the website and in the dominance of the relevant studies.
