ANCHOR - Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ANCHOR - Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award is the official music award of the Reeperbahn Festival , which is considered to be Europe's largest club festival. Since 2016, the ANCHOR has been awarded annually as part of the festival as an award for up-and-coming music talents.

The nominees are made up of bands and solo artists from the Reeperbahn Festival program. They are selected a few weeks before the festival by a panel of music experts. The artists will be assessed during their live shows over the course of the multi-day festival. The evaluation is carried out by an international jury made up of established experts from the music industry. The ANCHOR award ceremony, at which all nominees and the jury are present, takes place in front of an audience on the last day of the Reeperbahn Festival.

The award was brought to life by Alexander Schulz , the founder of the Reeperbahn Festival. The award ceremony is organized by the Hamburg event agency Inferno Events GmbH & Co. KG .

The idea behind the ANCHOR

The ANCHOR was conceived as a seal of quality and orientation aid for fans and the music industry alike. According to the organizers, the award serves the nominees as "a long-term trailblazer" and a "springboard into an international career."

Unlike in other music competitions, sales figures for sound carriers are not included in the evaluation. The ANCHOR jury assesses the nominees during their live performances during the Reeperbahn Festival and then rates them. In addition to the quality of the live performance, criteria are also other “soft factors” such as stage presence, charisma and interaction with the audience.

With its two-stage selection and evaluation process by the selection committee and jury, the ANCHOR also differs from other awards in the industry. For initiator Alexander Schulz, this process also means a return to the recommendations of experts in the music landscape: "We believe that this human assessment of good music, or even very good music, enables us to provide another guide."

Since the beginning, the core of the Reeperbahn Festival has been showing new talent, says Schulz. The embedding of the award in the already internationally established festival represents an absolute novelty for music events and the compression of the goals of the Reeperbahn Festival: to show new developments in music and the music industry and thereby favor the development of the artists.

In addition to regular spectators, the Reeperbahn Festival also hosts around 4,000 accredited media representatives and music experts from 43 countries every year. By participating in ANCHOR, the nominees have additional opportunities to present themselves at one of the world's most important events in the music and digital industry. Media and music industry representatives will in turn be presented with a number of artists pre-selected by experts with great commercial potential.

history

The ANCHOR - Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award was presented for the first time at the 11th edition of the Hamburg Club Festival, which took place from September 21 to 24, 2016. The winner of the ANCHOR 2016 was the Swedish singer-songwriter Albin Lee Meldau . Meldau was awarded the prize as "the most promising talent on the international music scene". One year later, the British singer and songwriter Jade Bird was awarded the ANCHOR 2017 as the successor to Albin Lee Meldau. Bird prevailed against seven competitors, including Alice Merton , the band First Hate and Matt Maltese.

The third ANCHOR - Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award was given to the Belgian band Faces on TV and the Belgian singer Tamino during the 13th Reeperbahn Festival from September 19 to September 22 in 2018 .

Media coverage

“Bands and artists like Bon Iver, Lykke Li, Jake Bugg, Ed Sheeran or Janelle Monáe had one of their first internationally important appearances at the Reeperbahn Festival. Now the Reeperbahn Festival is honoring outstanding acts with the ANCHOR Award for the first time. "

“Just a short time ago, the music industry debuted its latest prestigious award, and while that may at times seem like the last thing that's necessary for an already self-congratulatory business, this one has a noble purpose, and it has the potential to become something really special. "

“In 2016 the singer-songwriter Albin Lee Meldau received the first Anchor Award. For him, the participation was more than worth it: The Swedish artist signed a major record deal back in December. "

" The presentation of the Anchor Award, which was only launched last year, is one of the highlights on the last day of the festival."

"It remains exciting until the award ceremony, but all the nominees have already won, because the international attention they receive from an interested music and specialist audience at the Reeperbahn Festival catapults all nominees into the focus of the international music business."
