ARD pronunciation database

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ARD pronunciation database ( ADB ) is a community facility of ARD , which researches the correct pronunciation of foreign-language name forms ( exonyms ), especially place names and personal names, and makes it available in the internal network for the participating broadcasters .

The pronunciation database was founded at the end of the 1980s at the radio department of the Hessischer Rundfunk and has been accessible throughout the ARD since 1997. Today it is used by all affiliated radio stations on radio and television. The rules of the ADB are binding within the ARD. In addition to ARD, Deutschlandradio , Deutsche Welle , ZDF , Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), Swiss Radio and Television (SRF), the Italian television company Rai (South Tyrol) and the Franco-German broadcaster Arte are now working with the pronunciation database.

The ADB is run by its co-founder, radio broadcaster Roland Heinemann, and has a network of around 1,500 informants. At Hessischer Rundfunk, it reports to the radio broadcasting line.

In May 2017, the ARD pronunciation database contained around 380,000 program- related entries, including foreign-language proper names , names and terms from the fields of geography, art, literature, meteorology, military, music, politics, religion, sport, technology, business and science. In addition to the transcription in the International Phonetic Alphabet and a simplified German transcription ( All'bähr Üddärr'so / s = soft for Albert Uderzo ), since 1999 there have also been MP3 audio files for pronunciation for entries . The stock grows annually by 13,000 to 15,000 words.

The pronunciation examples available on the website of the Duden editorial team come from the ARD pronunciation database.
