background

Asda House , Leeds .

The Asquith brothers, heirs to a chain of butcher shops, opened their first supermarket in a former Castleford cinema in 1963 , and others soon followed. The Asda company was formed in 1965 from the merger of this supermarket chain and the Associated Dairies company , which in turn was formed in 1949 from JW Hindell Dairy Farmers Ltd., founded by a group of farmers from Yorkshire . was created.

In the 1970s the company expanded rapidly, also beyond the north of England. A deep crisis in the 1980s and early 1990s brought ASDA to the brink of bankruptcy, but it was possible to stabilize the company and make it profitable again by obtaining finance from the shareholders. After a restructuring along the lines of the world's largest retail chain Walmart in the second half of the 1990s, ASDA was bought by this on July 26, 1999 for 6.7 billion pounds.

It took over some of the former hypermarkets from the Woolworths Group . In 2011, 194 British branches of the Danish Netto were taken over. Asda has a total of 576 branches across the UK. In 2000, the first Asda Walmart commercial center ("Supercenter") opened in Bristol . Today there are 32 super centers in the UK; there are also 319 Asda superstores with somewhat more limited offers in the non-food area, 189 classic supermarkets and 32 Asda Living (with offers exclusively in the non-food area). Home shopping is also offered.

Asda employs approximately 175,000 people.
