ASM , also ASM (a state of mind) , ASM - a state of mind, a state of mind or just state of mind , are an international hip-hop trio. Their music can be assigned to alternative hip-hop , with influences from various other genres such as reggae , jazz and funk . It consists of the members Benjamin Bambach alias Green T or gt Lovecraft from Canada , Maik Schindler alias FP or Funk.E Poet from Germany and the beatmaker Adam Simmons alias Rhino or Fade from England . The group is under contract with the French indie label Chinese Man Records . ASM have already celebrated over 600 live performances in 25 countries. With a few exceptions (individual passages), all of the group's songs are in English .

history

Maik Schinder, Adam Simmons and Benjamin Bambach visited an international school in Frankfurt , where they met and began to make music together. They were influenced early on by old-school hip-hop .

Internationally ASM appeared for the first time as a feature on the track Positively Inclined on Wax Tailor's album Hope & Sorrow , and in 2009 with Say Yes also as a wax tailor feature, this time on the album In the Mood for Life . In the same year the single Pre-Emptive Nostalgia followed , which ASM produced together with the British rapper Skrein .

In 2013 ASM finally released their first solo album Platypus Funk , in which, in addition to influences from musical styles such as funk and reggae, the musical integration of live instruments in tracks and stage appearances, which ASM still does today. In the same year, the group's second solo album, Crown Yard , was released, in which, among other things, jazz themes are dealt with.

In 2015, ASM released their greatest international success to date, the album The Jade Amulet , which tells a fictional story with the group's rappers taking on roles. FP sets the main character Shalim Tan Suo to music , while Green T guides through the album as narrator. Various features such as Liliboy Deluxe , Astrid Engberg , Mighty Diamonds , Mattic and MF DOOM appear as additional characters. In addition to the album, ASM also created their own beer as part of the project ( Belko Brew , based on a fictional drink that is drunk in Vabaria , which is also the fictional setting of the story) and a comic book that tells the story. The album was set to music with the support of an orchestra.

With the EP String Theory , which was released in 2016, ASM returned to their roots in boom-bap- old-school hip-hop. In 2019, ASM was signed to the French independent label Chinese Man Records, and shortly afterwards released their last album, Color Wheel , under the label's name. ASM had previously supported the trip-hop trio Chinese Man from Marseille as live MCs on their Shikantaza tour .

Other Projects

In addition to his hip hop career, Benjamin Bambach is also the co-founder of Makoto Wagyu , an ecologically active beef company.

In addition, Bambach and Schindler, together with rapper Mattic, are part of the hip-hop trio Clouds In A Headlock , which released its debut on Chinese Man Records in April 2020 with ASMATTIC VOL 1 . They also appear as a feature on artists like Daylight Robbery! , The Waxidermist , Matteo and Antiloops make their appearance.

Adam Simmons pursues a solo career under the synonym Rhino apart from the group and founded the project Jukebox Champions together with Blanka from La Fine Equipe .
