The AS Rodos ( Greek Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Ρόδος ) is a Greek football club from Rhodes . Due to financial problems, the club currently only plays in the country's regional amateur leagues.

history

In 1968 the association was created from the merger of the three associations Diagoras, Dorieas and Rodiakos Rhodes. After a team and the board of the new club were formed, the goal was to move up to the Alpha Ethniki . But the desired goal did not come close in the coming years and so Rodos played in the fight to stay in the second division. It was not until the mid-1970s that the results changed and the association improved its position every year. In 1977/78, under the leadership of Dr. Georgio Lampadi and Michalis Belli the long-awaited promotion to the highest Greek league. After two years Rodos rose again to the second division. Once there, the club shared first place with Egaleo AO Athens in the 1980/81 season , so a play-off game had to be played on neutral ground. In the stadium of Heraklion Kostas Papaoikonomos scored the goal of the day and ensured the direct return to the first division.

In the following years, however, the AS Rodos experienced a constant decline and in 1988 even slipped into the amateur area for the first time. After two further ascents and descents, the club merged in 1994 with the re-established Diagoras Rodos club . Under the name Enosi Rodos-Diagoras they rose again in 1993 to the third division, but after two years back in the amateur area. The merger failed both economically and athletically and from 1999 they played again under the name AS Rodos. Under association with the team of Panogiannion Rodos, the club made its last promotion to the third division in 2003, where it has played since then. In the 2008/09 season Rodos reached 2nd place in the table and thus qualified for the playoff game for promotion to the second division. In the playoff game against Panetolikos they lost after a 1-0 lead with 1: 2, but due to the forced relegation of Apollon Kalamarias , Rodos was able to move into the second division later.

At the end of the 2009/10 season, the club saved itself in relegation, but was there after five draws and one defeat in six games last and rose again to the Football League 2 .
