After AWG was only represented in Baden-Württemberg until 1990, the company expanded from 1991 mainly in the new federal states. In 1994 the 50th branch opened, in 2000 the 100th branch and in 2008 the 200th branch. Today AWG fashion centers are represented in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Saarland.

In addition to well-known brands such as B. Adidas , Esprit , Cecil , Nike , Tom Tailor or Wrangler , AWG also sells clothing under its own brands such as Lisa Tossa , SURE , Southern Territory , Jim Spencer , one way , IX-O and Worker .

On January 28, 2019, the company applied to the Esslingen Local Court to open insolvency proceedings under self-administration . After several months of restructuring, the fashion retail chain AWG has completed its insolvency proceedings. In the course of the self-administered procedure, 47 of the almost 300 branches were closed. The proceedings were ended on July 1, 2019. Around 2,400 jobs were retained.
