Aa Kirke

The Aa Kirke (literally translated Bach Church , named after two streams flowing by nearby) is the largest and probably also the oldest church on Bornholm . The Bornholmer Landsting met for centuries in what was once the main church on the island . The church is located in the small town named after her, Aakirkeby . The patron saint of the church is John the Baptist , it was originally called Sankt Hans Kirke .

The church was built in the second half of the 12th century in several phases from green sandstone and Silurian limestone in the Romanesque style ; the oldest are the choir and apse, the youngest is the vestibule, one of the few Romanesque vestibules in Denmark. The church tower has two transverse gable roofs with small stepped gables . The Renaissance style pulpit and altarpiece are from the beginning of the 17th century. The most valuable inventory is the baptismal font of the Gotland master Sighraf made of brittle sandstone from around 1200.
