Aage Bentzen

Aage Bentzen (born December 13, 1894 in Ordrup , Gentofte Kommune , † June 4, 1953 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish Lutheran theologian and from 1929 until his death professor of the Old Testament at the University of Copenhagen .

Life

Bentzen studied with Frants Buhl and Johannes Pedersen in Copenhagen and with Gustav Hölscher and Paul Kahle in Gießen .

After winning a prize assignment on the history of the Sabbath, he had been a lecturer since 1923 and a full professor of exegesis of the Old Testament in Copenhagen since 1929. At the Old Testament Congress in Leiden in 1950 he was elected the first President of IOSOT and entrusted with the organization of its first congress in Copenhagen (1953). However, he died after a short illness a few weeks before the congress, so that his widow, Edith A. Bentzen-Smith, took over its leadership.

Bentzen published in Danish, German and English and was one of the most productive Old Testament scholars of his time. In addition to work on the history of Israel and the archeology and regional studies of Palestine, he devoted himself in particular to the psalms , but also commented on the book Isaiah , Kohelet and Daniel . His introduction to the Old Testament was published in Danish (1941) and English (1948–49, the second edition in 1952).

Honors

Bentzen received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel in 1950 and was made an honorary member of the British Society for Old Testament Study in 1953 .
