The Río Portoviejo is an approximately 142 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the province of Manabí in Ecuador .

River course

The Río Portoviejo arises at the confluence of the Río Mineral and Río Pata de Pájaro 40 km east of the city of Portoviejo in the Cordillera Costanera . The Poza Honda dam dams the river at river kilometer 132. Below this, the Río Portoviejo flows 40 km in a west-southwest direction through the mountains. The river reaches the small town of Santa Ana de Vuelta Larga and turns to the north-northwest. It now flows through a wide, deep valley. He develops a strongly meandering behavior with numerous river loops. There are numerous settlements near the river. At river kilometer 55 it flows through the city of Portoviejo. Then the Portoviejo River turns north. The small town of Rocafuerte is about a kilometer east of the river. The Río Portoviejo finally reaches the sea south of San Jacinto . There are numerous irrigated agricultural areas along the lower reaches.

Hydrology and catchment area

The Río Portoviejo drains an area of ​​2231 km². The mean discharge is 12 m³ / s. The source rivers of the Río Portoviejo arise in the Cordillera Costanera, a ridge that runs along the Ecuadorian Pacific coast.

Dam Poza Honda

The 1969–1971 built Poza Honda dam ( ) is located on the upper reaches of the Río Portoviejo. It is used to supply drinking and industrial water as well as to irrigate the agricultural areas located downstream. The dam consists of a 40 m high and 330 m wide earth embankment . There is a flood relief system on the south side. The dam dams the Río Portoviejo over a length of 9.5 km and extends to the junction of its source rivers. In April 2016 there was a strong earthquake in the region. As a result, u. a. the dam was examined by experts for possible damage.
