The Aalborg University (AAU) is located in the Danish city of Aalborg . It was opened in 1974 as the fifth university in Denmark . In 1995 the Esbjerg Engineering College was integrated into the university (AAU-Esbjerg), followed by the expansion of Aalborg University in 1996 by the Institute for Architecture and Design , in 1996 by the inauguration of the Copenhagen campus (AAU-CPH), in 2003 by the integration by the Institute of Technology Copenhagen , in 2006 by the Institute of Medicine and in 2007 by the integration of the State Building Research Institute.

The university differs from the older and more traditionally oriented Danish universities in that it focuses on interdisciplinary and cross-faculty studies. In addition, there is an experimental curriculum, the basis of which is an interdisciplinary basic course with subsequent specialization options, as well as an educational structure with a starting point in problem-oriented training and research-relevant projects from real life. This approach, the so-called Aalborg model or the Aalborg experiment, has received recognition and attention at both national and international level. With the problem-based approach, organized in project form, a large part of the semester lessons and the study work revolve around complex problems from real life - questions to which the students develop answers in dynamic group work using scientific methods.

Special fields of activity and interdisciplinary research

The strongest research area is that of technical science, with the areas of medical technology and wireless communication being selected as special fields of activity.

The university has always followed an interdisciplinary research approach, as this - like the course teaching - is problem-based. The solution of a current problem often requires the contribution of different scientific disciplines. There are five interdisciplinary fields of activity at Aalborg University:

Sustainable energy, environment and technology
Global production, innovation, knowledge development and coherence
Information technology and embedded software
Nanotechnology and Nanoproduction
Experience technology and design

International Relations

Since its inception, the focus has been on an international orientation - a local university with an international perspective. In the field of research, there is an emphasis on international cooperation; Among other things, a department for wireless communication and satellite navigation has been established at the University of Rome, Tor Vegata, and at the University of Kolkata in India, as well as two centers for telecommunications, one at the Birla Institute of Technology in India and one at the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia. The share of foreign researchers at Aalborg University is 25%. The number of international students has increased constantly and is currently 10% of the total number of students. In Germany, Ansbach University has a partnership with Aalborg University.

Acknowledgment given to Aalborg University in 2001 is the creation of the UICEE Problem Based Learning Center (UCPBL), which subsequently led to the designation of Aalborg University as UNESCO Headquarters for Problem Based Learning.

Awards

In October 2017, the university was named the best European university in engineering by US News & World Report .
