Aaron from Krakow
Aaron of Cracow , Anchoras of Cracow or Aron of Cracow (* probably in Ireland ; † October 9, 1059 in Cracow , Poland ) was the first abbot of the Benedictine abbey Tyniec on the river Vistula near Cracow in 1044 and finally Archbishop of Cracow . He is listed in a Benedictine menology of saints and blessed as blessed .
Life
According to the historiography of the 17th century, Aaron was a French-born monk of the Abbey of Cluny and there a pupil of Abbot Odilo of Cluny . Other sources assume that the monk, who probably came from Ireland or Scotland, initially belonged to the Brauweiler Abbey . This is mentioned there in 1028. Queen Richeza's parents had founded the Brauweiler Abbey, and she and her son, Duke Casimir I Karl of Poland, founded the Tyniec Abbey in 1044. Aaron renewed the then vacant bishopric and helped Duke Casimir rebuild the monarchy. In 1038 the Polish capital was moved from Gniezno to Krakow, which also increased the importance of the diocese.
After Aaron was soon appointed bishop of Krakow - usually the year 1046 - it is not entirely clear whether Aaron was only personally appointed archbishop, when he received the pallium and whether the diocese was raised to an archbishopric under him. The place and year of episcopal ordination are also not certain.
