Abílio Manuel Guerra Junqueiro (born September 15, 1850 in Freixo de Espada à Cinta , Alto Trás-os-Montes region ; † July 7, 1923 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet, satirist, diplomat and politician who lived at the end of the 19th century. Century and at the beginning of the 20th century belonged to the most important Portuguese poets.

Life

Abílio Guerra Junqueiro was born in a small municipality in the Trás-os-Montes province. After dropping out of theology studies, he studied law in Coimbra until 1873 and joined various student associations. He also became one of the leading figures of the so-called "School of Coimbra", an association of literary figures who advocated a renewal of Portuguese culture and social life.

He was also politically active: in the 1880s he was a member of the Cortes , the Portuguese parliament, several times for one year . From 1911 to 1914 he was the Portuguese envoy to Switzerland .

He was primarily perceived as a poet: his work contains strong nationalist tones, but popular poems also find a place in his work. His most famous poem, "A pátria" (The Fatherland), was written to express his disappointment with Britain's policy of expansion in Africa at the expense of Portugal .

The staunch atheist entered the Catholic Church shortly before his death.

Abílio Guerra Junqueiro died in Lisbon in 1923.
