The mountain range extends over a length of 40 km in a west-east direction south of the western main ridge of the Greater Caucasus . It is delimited to the north and east by the river valleys of the Chchalta and the Kodori . To the west, beyond the 1870 m high Amtkeli pass and the Kelassur river valley further south, the Bsipi mountains join. In the Schchalizga the mountain range reaches a height of 3,026 m . The mountains consist of porphyry from the Jura and mica slate . The rivers Amtkeli and Jampali drain the mountains to the south. The Amtkeli Lake was created by a landslide on October 3, 1891 .
