Abdelmajid Chetali ( Arabic عبد المجيد الشتالي, DMG ʿAbd al-Maǧīd aš-Šatālī ; * July 4, 1939 in Sousse , Tunisia ) is a former Tunisian soccer player and soccer coach . In 1978 he coached the Tunisian national soccer team , which was the first African team to win a World Cup final.

Etoile du Sahel

Abdelmajid Chetali comes from a sporty family. At the age of 18 he made his debut in the first team of the Étoile Sportive du Sahel in the game against Sfax Railways Sports . As a playmaker , he played in his first season in the Championnat de Tunisie 1956/57 in the regular formation of the Etoile du Sahel.

National team

Chetali first wore the national jersey on March 8, 1959 at the age of 20. He participated in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome . The Tunisian team lost all three group games against Poland , Argentina and Denmark . At the African Cup of Nations in 1965 in his own country, he led the team to the final against Ghana . Despite his goal in the 47th minute, Tunisia lost the game in extra time with the final result 2: 3.

Etoile du Sahel

After ending his active career in 1968, he studied at the German Sport University in Cologne . After graduation, Chetali returned to Sousse and took on a coaching job with Etoile's first team. In five years he won the Championnat de Tunisie (championship title) in 1972 , as well as the Coupe de Tunisie (cup) twice in 1974 and 1975. In 1973 he also won the Maghreb Champions Cup .

National team

In 1975 Chetali took over responsibility for the Tunisian national soccer team . The team manages to secure participation in a World Cup finals for the first time. In the group B game against Mexico in the 1978 World Cup , Tunisia achieved an historic victory. Despite being 0: 1 behind in the first half, the Tunisians turned the game around and won 3: 1. This meant the first victory of an African team in a final tournament. In the second group game, however, they lost 0-1 to Poland, who were third in the 1974 World Cup . The third game against defending champions Germany ended 0-0. Tunisia finished the preliminary round in third place and therefore missed the second round. Thanks to this achievement, the number of African World Cup participants was increased from one to two.

Despite three more World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002 and 2006, the Tunisian team stayed with this only victory in a final round.

At 38 years and 333 days, Abdelmajid Chetali was the youngest coach in the 1978 World Cup.
