Abdelmonem Chouayet ( Arabic عبد المنعم شويات, DMG ʿAbd al-Munʿim Šuwaiyāt ) is a Tunisian actor and director . He teaches theater at the Higher Institute for Dramatic Arts and at El Teatro Studio in Tunis . He is one of the most famous actors in Tunisia . For the role as Mustafa Z in the film of the same name, Mustafa Z , he was honored with the Best Actor award at the Carthage Film Festival 2017 . In 2018 he received the Golden Sotigui for the same role as Best African Actor at the Ouagadougou Panafrican Film and Television Festival ( FESPACO ) in Burkina Faso .

Career

theatre

Chouayet grew up in Ain Draham , near the Algerian border. It is known that Chouayet's great passion is theater. He started working with the Tunisian actor and director Ezzedine Gannoun at the El Hamra Theater at an early age. It is not documented where Chouayet made his first steps as an actor. He was first mentioned in Khaoula Hadef's production Faits divers in 2001. According to the known data, it can be said that he gained a lot of experience on the stage of El Hamra in Tunis and became famous. El Hamra has existed since 1922 and was a movie theater in the 30s and 40s of the 20th century that the capital city flocked to. It was then closed for a few years and was reopened in 1987. Until his death in 2015, Gannoun managed it as director, redesigned it and created a place where young artists could find training and commitment. The “Arab-African Center for Education and Theater Research” was founded in 2000 and has been located in the premises of El Hamra ever since. There Chouayet took part in various theater performances, surrounded by a number of other well-known Tunisian artists such as Taoufik El Ayeb, Leila Toubel , Chekra Rammeh or Foued Litaiem. Productions such as État civil and Nicotine by Atef Ben Hassine were created. These two pieces are linked together. If État civil was created under the influence of censorship and dictatorship in Tunisia, the same ensemble around Chouayet came together again for Nicotine after 7 years to now perform a revised, more politically tinged version, created in the era of freedom of expression.

Chouayet has directed various plays. The play Antigone produced by Chouayet - in sign language - pays homage to the Tunisian who, like Antigone , contradicts King Creon and his repressive laws. With this piece Chouayet was represented at the Festival Avignon Off 2011. Un riche, trois pauvres , a 1986 play by Louis Calaferte , was realized by Chouayet in 2015 for the El Teatro Studio in Tunis. In 2017 he and the dancer Selma Boukef directed the play Des fleurs pour Algernon based on the science fiction novel by Daniel Keyes . Chouayet embodies the role of Charlie in this original piece. Both limited themselves primarily to the Algernon-Charlie relationship for the staging by showing the development of the two characters, especially on the level of the dance.

In March 2019, Chouayet was the artistic director of the 1st edition of the Ezzedine Gannoun Festival for Theater, which took place at El Hamra. The festival was held in combination with the 5th World Theater Week and World Theater Day on the initiative of the Tunisian National Theater. About his motivation and vision to bring this festival to life, Chouayet said:

"Above all, it is a necessary homage to this great man of the theater who made El Hamra Space an institution dedicated to promoting creation and education."

The festival focused on directors. According to Chouayet, director is not a profession in the strict sense, it would be a state of being. According to Chouayet, a director is a conductor who has to have a global vision of the work and its future. He further stated:

"Ezzedine Gannoun had a clear vision of the role of everyone in creation and we thought it was urgent and useful to dedicate a festival to them to reflect on the status of the director and give him visibility (...)"

Chouayet, who has long been associated with El Hamra, feels privileged to have worked under this great man of Tunisian theater and to have also worked with him. Directors such as Taoufik Jebali, Fadhel Jaibi, the late Abdelwahab El Jemli and especially the actor Issa Harath, who is a living institution for him, are still schools today where he would orient himself and learn.

Drama teacher

Chouayet is not tied in any direction. Neither as an actor nor as a teacher. He keeps himself open to work on quality projects in all of these projects. In addition to teaching at the Institute for Drama and El Theatro, he also teaches children's theater. In this context he also works with deaf and dumb people. In his own way he offers a voice to all those who have no sound. In this way he promotes a different form of speech, that of the body, hands and looks. Chouayet devoted his dissertation to the theatrics of sign language . Together with students from the Institute for Drama, Chouayet teaches at two primary schools in Tunis. These are workshops that introduce children between the ages of 6 and 12 to the art of puppetry , with the children choosing characters from stories, imagining and making the figure and then learning to use it. At the end of the workshop there will be a performance as part of the Dream City Festival, which has been taking place in the Medina (old town) of Tunis since 2007. This project, carried out by the association “L'Art Rue - Art and Education”, is supported by the Drosos Foundation , the Open Society Foundations and the European Union and has the motto “Reduction of violence through art” and is aimed particularly at children in precarious situations Situations.

Movie and TV

Chouayet is known to a much wider audience both nationally and internationally as an actor in film and television. TV series that are broadcast during the month of Ramadan are very popular in Tunisia . There Chouayet was seen there in the 15-part series Lemnara in 2017. Over 100 actors were involved in this series, which had with the director Atef Ben Hassine a companion Chouayet from theater days. The series also bears the French title Le phare. There are also some short films in Chouayet's repertoire , including Kif Lokhrin by Mohamed Ben Attia from 2006.

Chouayet has played various roles on the big screen. There would be Adel, the flower seller from Le Prince , unhappily in love with a bank manager, a role in the area of drama and romance or - on the other hand - the role of Fatih in Boughedir's Parfum de printemps, a comedy . As Mohsen Bastardo in the film Bastardo , Chouayet achieved international recognition. After its premiere in Toronto , the film was shown at various festivals around the world and brought Chouayet good reviews.

“We remember Monoom Chouayet in his leading role in the fairy tale Le prince (Mohamed Zran, 2004), but here he shows, like all actors, a masterful drama that is able to constantly slip between basic naturalism and another dimension that oscillates between surrealism, the grotesque and the terrible. His play as Inspector Abdallah in Le Dernier Mirage , a film by Nidhal Chatta , alongside Jean-Marc Barr and Elisa Tovati was also striking . In Sonia Chamkhi's film Narcisse , Chouayet played the role of a fundamentalist. Chouayet then made his way to the top of the actors of his generation in Tunisia in the role of Mustafa Z , based on Nidhal Chatta 's film of the same name . The film received over 10 worldwide awards, 5 of which went to Chouayet alone. Starting with the award for Best Actor in 2017 at the Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia, which has existed since 1966, the series of awards for Best Actor continued through Morocco , where Chouayet emerged as the winner of the Oujda Film Festival . He was also successful with this role at the Alexandria International Film Festival . Chouayet was then given a very special honor at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso , when he received both the award for Best North African Actor and the Golden Sotigui Award , which stands for Best African Actor . His last role for the time being was that of Ibrahim in Moez Kamoun's The Crow's Siesta . The film also has the other titles La Sieste du Corbeau (fr) and Chitan El Kayla (ar).
