Abdoulaye Niandou Souley (* 1962 or 1963 ; † in July 2010 ) was a Nigerien political scientist and legal scholar .

Life

Abdoulaye Niandou Souley was a brother of the politician Bibata Niandou Barry and the politician Harouna Niandou . He attended the Lycée Issa Korombé in Niamey and initially studied law in Abidjan , where he completed a maîtrise , supplemented by a maîtrise in political science at the University of Yaoundé in 1986 and a doctorate in political science at the University of Bordeaux I in 1992. In Niger Niandou Souley worked as Lecturer ( maître-assistant ) at the Faculty of Economics and Law at Niamey University , where he headed the Department of Law for many years. In his academic publications, he focused on democratization processes in Africa .

During the democratic upheaval in Niger in the early 1990s, Abdoulaye Niandou Souley was active as a representative of civil society and was known for his public speeches in Niamey. He wrote articles for Haské , the country's first independent daily newspaper founded in 1990, and helped found the satirical weekly Moustique . Increasingly drawn from his alcoholism , he later reduced his public appearances. When President Mamadou Tandja tried to obtain a third term in office that was not provided for in the constitution in 2009, Niandou Souley returned to the public as a vehement opponent of the President, against whom he appeared with speeches broadcast on the radio. He fell out with his sister Bibata Niandou Barry, who was a loyal government minister. After the removal of President Tandja by the officer Salou Djibo in February 2010, Niandou Souley was appointed to the transitional parliament, the National Consultative Council, which he was critical of because of its military nature. He died a few months later at the age of 47, leaving behind a wife and child.
