Sheikh Abdul Basit 'Abd us-Samad ( Arabic عبد الباسط عبد الصمد, DMG ʿAbdu l-Bāsiṭ ʿAbdu ṣ-Ṣamad ; born in 1927 in Armant , Egypt ; died November 30, 1988 ), also known as Abdul Basit Muhammad Abdus Samad and Abdul-Basit Muhammad Abdus-Samad , was an Egyptian reciter of the Quran .

Life

Abdul Basit memorized the entire Quran at the age of ten. For the Tarāwīh prayer during Ramadan , he had already led the prayers as imam and reciter at the age of 14 . In 1950, Abdul Basit went to Cairo , where he quickly gained notoriety as a reciter. His pitch, timbre and mastery of the Koran recitation rules made him known throughout the Arab world. Abd us-Samad traveled to several places. Among other things, he traveled to the Soviet Union with the then Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser . In the 1970s, he won three worldwide Quran recitation competitions.

He was one of the first hafiz to have recordings of Koran recitations distributed commercially. His recordings are known in the Muslim world to this day.

Abdul Basit Abd us-Samad died in 1988. The cause of death is given differently as diabetes or car accident .
