Abel is a lunar crater in the northwest of Mare Australe on the front of the moon. It has a diameter of around 119 kilometers and is located south of the Barnard Crater .
The rim of the crater is heavily eroded and irregular in shape. It was cut and overlaid by several impact craters. Abel A crater overlays the southern rim, while Abel M and Abel L penetrate the western rim of the crater.
The inner area in the east was redesigned by lava flows, so that a relatively flat area with low albedo was created. To the west, the subsoil is rougher and the albedo is the same as that of the terrain surrounding the crater.
