The Hydra galaxy cluster or Hydra cluster , listed in the Abell catalog as Abell 1060 , is a galaxy cluster located in the constellation Hydra , it is a member of the Hydra Centaurus supercluster .
The Hydra Galaxy Cluster is 176 million light years away and includes 157 bright galaxies . It lies fairly isolated and is therefore almost spherical with the two large, elliptical galaxies NGC 3309 and NGC 3311 in the center. These and eight others were discovered by John Herschel in 1835 and 1836, with Herschel already recognizing the group character.
The galaxies NGC 3312 and NGC 3314, which are also in the area of the cluster, do not belong to it, but are part of a group in the foreground.
The cluster shows a redshift of 0.011, which corresponds to an escape speed of 3400 km / s.
