NGC 3311 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Hydra at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 162 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 ly in diameter. It is the brightest galaxy in the Hydra Cluster .
The galaxies NGC 3307 , NGC 3308 , NGC 3309 , NGC 3312 are located in the same area of the sky .
NGC 3311 is above Messier 87 galaxy with the largest known number of globular clusters ; it comprises about 16,000.
The object was discovered by astronomer John Herschel on March 30, 1835 with a 47.5 cm telescope.
