NGC 3309 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Hydra south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 173 million light years from the Milky Way , has a diameter of about 100,000 ly, and is a member of the Abell 1060 hydra galaxy cluster .
The galaxies NGC 3308 , NGC 3307 , NGC 3311 , IC 629 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 24, 1835 .
