NGC 3290 = Arp 53 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBBC in the constellation Hydra south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 464 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 140,000 ly. Halton Arp divided his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a small companion of high surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
