Abell 39 is a planetary nebula with low surface brightness in the constellation Hercules . The nebula is believed to be approximately 6800 light years from Earth and 4600 light years from the galactic plane . It has an almost spherical geometry.
Its name derives from the entry in George Abell's Abell Catalog of Planetary Nebulae from 1966.
Central star
The central star of the nebula is about 2 "(about 0.1 light-years) west of the center. This does not seem to be due to an interaction with interstellar matter, but to result from a slight asymmetry in the distribution of the ejected matter. The mass of the central star is assumed to be 0.6 M ☉ , while the ejected matter of the nebula has a mass of 0.6 M ☉ .
