Abell Catalog of Planetary Nebulae

The Abell Catalog of Planetary Nebulae was created in 1966 by George Ogden Abell and contained 86 newly discovered objects that were believed to be planetary nebulae . About half of them were discovered by Albert George Wilson ; the rest of Abell, Robert G. Harrington and Rudolph Minkowski . All discoveries were made by August 1955 as part of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey using photographic plates on the 48-inch (1.2-meter) Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar Observatory . Four of these objects are also in other catalogs: Abell 50 is NGC 6742 , Abell 75 is NGC 7076 , Abell 37 is IC 972, and Abell 81 is IC 1454 . Four more entries were later deleted because they are not planetary nebulae. These are: Abell 11 ( reflection nebula ), Abell 32 (plate defect ), Abell 76 ( ring galaxy PGC 85185 ) and Abell 85 ( supernova remnant CTB 1, already mentioned in Abell's publication 1966). Three other candidates were also not included in the Strasbourg-ESO Catalog of Galactic Planetary Nebulae (SEC): Abell 9, Abell 17 (plate defect) and Abell 64. Planetary nebulae from this list are best with a telescope with a large aperture and an OIII -Filter to watch.
