geography

The Río Abión rises in a spring pot on the south side of an unnamed mountain. It flows first a short distance in a southerly direction, then - apart from a few loops - in a westerly direction and flows into the Río Lobos (sometimes also called Río Ucero ) about one kilometer southwest of the city center of El Burgo de Osma .

Ecosystem

While the upper course of the Río Abión is still quite natural and offers opportunities for fishing and hiking, large areas are used for agriculture on both sides of its middle and lower course. The withdrawal of water and the extensive fertilization have caused the river to overturn biologically in this area (recognizable by the algae carpets ). Fish and crayfish can no longer exist in the oxygen-poor and over-fertilized water.
