Abies × sibirico-nephrolepis is a hybrid thatarosefrom the natural crossing of the East Siberian fir ( Abies nephrolepis ) with the Siberian fir ( Abies sibirica ). So far, occurrences are only known from the north of the Chinese province of Heilongjiang .

description

Abies × sibirico-nephrolepis grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of up to 25 meters. In its appearance, the hybrid resembles the two parent species, often showing a greater similarity to the East Siberian fir. The needles are around 1.5 centimeters long, which is shorter than those of the East Siberian fir.

The cones have cover scales that are less than three quarters as long as the seed scales. The sterile seeds are similar to those of the Siberian fir and have a long seed wing.

Distribution and location

So far only occurrences in the north of Heilongjiang in China have been reported. However, it can be assumed that Abies × sibirico-nephrolepis also occurs in other locations where the distribution area of the parent species overlaps. It can be found in mountain valleys, where it forms mixed stands with the two parent species and other conifer species.

Systematics

Abies × sibirico-nephrolepis is a naturally occurring hybrid between the East Siberian fir ( Abies nephrolepis ) and the Siberian fir ( Abies sibirica ). Some authors consider it only part of the natural variation of the East Siberian fir. However, because it has traits from both species, it is more likely that it is a hybrid.

The first description of Abies × sibirico-nephrolepis was carried out in 1957 by Makoto Takenouchi and Jia Ju Chien in "Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica", Vol 6 (1), page 153, panels 37 (C1-C3) and 38 (C1-C10). However, the name, which is made up of the epithets of the two parent species, is invalid according to Art. H10.3 ICBN .
