Abies Hickelii is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ). It occurs in southern Mexico .

description

Abies hickelii grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 20 to 30 meters. It forms an irregularly shaped crown . The gray bark is divided into square plates. The slightly hairy bark of the twigs is dark brown to reddish in color. The spherical to slightly egg-shaped buds are resinous and contain blunt bud scales.

The needles , twisted at the base and arranged almost in two lines and spread out broadly on the branches, are 1.5 to 3.2 centimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters wide. Their point is often notched. They are glossy dark green on the top of the needle and blue-green on the underside of the needle. There are 14 to 16 rows of stomas on the underside of the needle .

The cones stand on a stalk about 1 centimeter long. The slightly resinous, dark brown to purple-brown colored cones are cylindrical-elongated with a length of 7 to 12 centimeters and a diameter of 3.5 to 7 centimeters. The 6 to 7 millimeter long seeds have an orange-yellow wing about 1.3 centimeters long.

Occurrence

Abies hickelii occurs in southern Mexico in the states of Veracruz , Guerrero , Oaxaca and Chiapas .

They can be found at altitudes between 1650 and 3000 meters.

Systematics

Abies hickelii is assigned within the genus of firs ( Abies ) as one of only two species of the subsection Hickelianae in the section Oiamel . It was first described in 1932 by Fernande Flous and Henri Marcel Gaussen in "Bulletin de la Société d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse", Volume 64, Page 24.

Varieties

The species is divided into two varieties :

  • Abies hickelii var. Hickelii : It occurs from the states of Guerrero to Chiapas.
  • Abies Hickelii var. Macrocarpa Martínez (Syn .: Abies Hickelii var. Oaxacana (Martínez) Farjon & Silba , Abies oaxacana Mart. ): It comes near Ixtlan in the state of Oaxaca before.

Hazard and protection

Abies hickelii is listed as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List . The macrocarpa variety is also listed as "endangered" on the Red List. Extensive logging and loss of habitat in connection with a low stand density are named as the main risk factors. It is pointed out, however, that a new check of the risk is necessary for both entries.
