Abies Yuanbaoshanensis is a plant from the genus of the fir ( Abies ) in the family of Pinaceae (Pinaceae). It is endemic to the Guangxi Autonomous Region of China . The natural population of the species only described in 1980 comprises only around 100 specimens.

description

Abes yuanbaoshanensis grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 25 meters and diameters of up to 60 centimeters at chest height . The dark red-brown bark is unevenly torn. The hairless bark of the branches is initially yellow or light brown in color and after two to three years the color turns into a brownish black.

The very resinous, conical winter buds are brown-red in color. The straight needles, which are arranged slightly radially on the branches, are 1 to 2.7 centimeters long and 1.8 to 2.5 millimeters wide. There are two white stomatal bands on the underside of the needle .

The flowering time is in May. With a length of 8 to 9 centimeters and a diameter of 4.5 to 5 centimeters, the short-cylindrical cones are initially yellow-green and, when they are ripe in October, light brown-yellow in color. With a length of around 1 centimeter, the inverted triangular to elliptical, vesicular and resinous seeds are dark red-brown in color. The seed wing is around twice as long as the seed.

Occurrence

The natural range of Abies yuanbaoshanensis is in the north of the Chinese Autonomous Region of Guangxi ; there it occurs on the Yuanbao Shan in the Rongshui Autonomous County . It grows at altitudes of 700 to 2100 meters.

Systematics

Abies yuanbaoshanensis is assigned to the Pseudopicea section and the Delavayianae subsection within the genus of firs ( Abies ) . The first description by YJ Lu and Li Kuo Fu took place in 1980 in The genus Abies discovered for the first time in Guangxi and Hunan , in Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica , 18 (2), pp. 206-207, plate 1. The type material was by YJ Lu collected. A synonym for Abies yuanbaoshanensis Y.J.Lu & LKFu is Abies fabri subsp. yuanbaoshanensis (YJLu & LKFu) Silba .

Hazard and protection

Abies yuanbaoshanensis is listed as "Critically Endangered" on the IUCN Red List . Only around 100 trees grow in the natural location, most of which are over 100 years old. The main reasons for endangerment are slow rejuvenation and the feeding of seeds by squirrels. Competitive pressure with different Fargesia species represents a further risk factor.
