Fargesia is a bamboo genus of the subtribe Arundinariinae and thus a genus of sweet grasses (Poaceae).

description

This genus consists of bamboo species with heights between 1.5 m and 6 m and stalk thicknesses of up to 3 cm. You can recognize them especially by the number of their branches, 3 or more, the numerous small leaves and their narrow and permanent stalks. They have pachymorphic rhizomes and therefore form clumps and not runners . They belong to the monocarpic plants that, like many other types of bamboo, die after flowering and only reproduce through seeds. Sometimes it is possible to stimulate renewed growth by cutting back to the ground. The flowering rhythm is 80 to 120 years.

The Fargesia species are very hardy and therefore common as ornamental plants in Europe. Since they do not form runners, they can stand next to other types of plants without overgrowing them. The propagation takes place by dividing the clumps.

etymology

The name Fargesia is reminiscent of the French missionary Paul Guillaume Farges (1844–1912), who worked in western China.

Species (selection) and distribution

The genus consists of 83 to 90 species . At least 78 species are native to China, mainly in western China in the Sichuan , Yunnan , Gansu and Hubei regions . 77 of these species are endemic . Other species occur in Vietnam. They live at altitudes of around 1000 to 4000 m above sea level with a moderate climate .

The following are no longer included in the genus Fargesia :
