Abraham Constantin Mouradgea d'Ohsson (born September 26, 1779 in Istanbul , † December 25, 1851 in Berlin ) was a Franco- Armenian Mongolist in the Swedish diplomatic service.

Life

D'Ohsson - a son of Ignatius Mouradgea d'Ohsson (1740-1807), who wrote an early history of the Ottoman Empire - worked from 1811 to 1813 as a Chargé d'affaires in Paris. After the French defeat in the Russian campaign in 1812, he was recalled by Crown Prince Karl Johann .

D'Ohsson's “History of the Mongols from Genghis Khan to Tamerlane ” is one of the first comprehensive historical works on the Mongols and their time. It was first published in Paris in 1824 , and most recently in four volumes in La Haye and Amsterdam in four volumes. It is still useful today because of D'Ohsson's masterful analysis of Arabic, Turkish, and especially Persian sources. The main work Histoire des Mongols from the first half of the 19th century to the most recent times has appeared in Russian, Japanese and Chinese translations.
