Dump
A flophouse (English. Dosshouse , Nordamerik. Flophouse ) is a short form for the term flophouse quarters . This designates either a hotel or guest house in which someone intends to stay on his journey, or an apartment that is kept so that there is no observation. Today it is usually used to describe a simple, inferior or bad repute accommodation .
Meaning and etymology
In the 20th and 21st centuries, colloquially, it was often used derogatory to refer to a shabby inn or hostel ( hotel ) where there was little or no service offered beyond the mere accommodation . A “dump” can now also be a hostel , a cheap guesthouse or an hourly hotel . In relation to the latter, and more rarely to brothels , the term dump is also used as a euphemism in advertisements.
Well-known shelters
- A well-known and "dangerous dump" in German literature is Das Wirtshaus im Spessart by Wilhelm Hauff (1828).
- The Trausnitz maintained from 1869 on the top floor of the royal building a representative flophouse quarters for King Ludwig II.
- Friedrich V von Schaunberg designated the Freisaal Castle as a lodging for all newly elected archbishops.
