On December 9, 2019, a Lockheed C-130 of the Chilean Air Force had an accident on the way from Punta Arenas in Patagonia to the Antarctic at Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva . In this crash, 38 people were believed to be killed. The aircraft, built in 1978, disappeared in Drakestrasse about two hours after take-off, three days later the first parts of the wreckage were found by ships.
flight
The flight was supposed to bring supplies to the Antarctic territory on King George Island , which was administered by Chile but also claimed by Argentina and Great Britain , and also had personnel on board to inspect a fuel pipeline and other technical facilities. Flights in this context are usually carried out monthly by the Chilean Air Force.
The plane took off at 10:21 Chilean time in Santiago de Chile and landed at 14:44 in Punta Arenas . After it had been refueled, the machine took off towards Antarctica at 4:53 p.m. The last known position was the waypoint HORNO at 17:44, the next waypoint would have been DRAKE on the airway UW100 or UT100 , 207 NM (approx. 380 km ) south-southeast of HORNO .
Search and location
After it became clear that the plane must have landed or crashed due to lack of fuel, a large-scale search was started. In addition to Chile, Argentina, Brazil , Israel , the United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay also took part in this . Chile sent u. a. two frigates in the area where the machine was last seen on the air traffic control radar. The search was made difficult by rough seas and poor visibility.
The crash site was finally located about 27 km from the last known position of the machine on December 12, 2019. In addition to aircraft parts, body parts were also recovered and all occupants on board were declared dead by the Chilean General Arturo Merino, commander of the air force.
plane
The aircraft with the serial number 4776 was commissioned for the United States Air Force with the number 77-0324, but then delivered to the United States Marine Corps as a tanker (KC-130) and was in the course of its time, among other things, in the Navy Corps Air Station Cherry Point , North Carolina and Iwakuni , Japan . In 2009 the machine was taken out of service and parked at AMARG near Tucson , Arizona , bought from Chile in 2014 for seven million US dollars and then prepared for its return to the Hill Air Force Base in Utah by 2015 and delivered to the South American country. It bore the aircraft registration number 990 .
