Renate "Rena" Schmitzer (born March 7, 1941 in Nuremberg ; † March 15, 2019 in Ulm ) was a German costume designer .

Live and act

After an apprenticeship as a tailor, Renate Schmitzer completed a degree in costume design at the Werkkunstschule in Cologne . Her first encounter with the theater was an internship as a costume design assistant at the Schauspielhaus Cologne . Her first permanent engagement took her to the Schauspielhaus Dortmund from 1967 to 1972 . Then she brought Peter Borchardt to the Ulm City Theater . Here she worked as a costume designer for operas, operettas, musicals, ballet and drama until 1980.

From then on she worked as a freelancer at numerous German opera and theaters, including Berlin, Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dresden, Essen, Hamburg, Hanover, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Meiningen, Munich.

Within Europe she worked at the theaters of Antwerp, Athens, Basel, Bern, Catania, Paris, London, Salzburg, Vienna and Zurich.

From the end of the 90s, Renate Schmitzer placed her artistic focus increasingly on the opera.

Schmitzer worked with the directors Peter Borchardt , John Dew, Klaus Emmerich, Stefan Herheim , Augusto Fernandez , Eike Gramms , Juri Petrowitsch Ljubimow , Jean-Louis Martinoty , Peter Mussbach , Giancarlo del Monaco , Thomas Schulte-Michels and Ansgar Haag .

She worked together for many years with Dietrich W. Hilsdorf and the set designer Dieter Richter. Further collaborations existed with the set designers Heinz Balthes , Wilfried Minks and Haitger M. Boeken.
