Heinz Balthes

Heinz Balthes (* 1937 in Ediger / Mosel ) is a German set designer who works primarily for the opera .

Life

Heinz Balthes studied set design with Teo Otto at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1959 to 1963 . He then worked at the Kammerspiele Düsseldorf under the direction of Hannsjörg Utzerath, who took him there as a set designer after his appointment to the Freie Volksbühne Berlin .

After guest appearances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Fürst Igor 1973, Coppelia 1973), the Staatstheater Braunschweig, Stadttheater Heidelberg, and the Theater in der Josefstadt Wien, he was engaged as a set designer and director at the Musiktheater im Revier (Gelsenkirchen) and then followed the artistic director Günther Könemann to Karlsruhe , where Balthes set up over 100 operas from 1977 to 2002. He was primarily entrusted with furnishing the Handel operas, which were a focus of his work at the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe .

Guest engagements have taken him to the Palais Garnier and the Opéra-Comique , Teatro Real in Madrid (world premiere of the Merlin opera by Isaac Albéniz ), the Hamburg State Opera , the Vienna State Opera , the Zurich Opera House , among others Houston Grand Opera (Texas), to Catania (Sicily), to the Salzburg Festival (stage design for Mozart's earliest operas The Duty of the First Commandment and for Apollo et Hyacinthus ), to the Schwetzingen Festival , and to the Avignon Festival . For the Handel Festival in Halle he designed the sets for Handel's opera Rodrigo and for Ballet Basel under the direction of Heinz Spoerli he designed several sets for engagements in New York. Since 2004 he has been working with the opera director John Dew at the Hessisches Staatstheater Darmstadt .
Balthes lives in Birkweiler .
