John Dew

John Dew (born June 1, 1944 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba) is a British opera director and artistic director .

Life

John Dew grew up in New York City , where he also studied art history and stage design . From 1982 to 1995 he was senior director of the opera at the Bielefeld Theater . There he was best known for his "excavations" of operas that had not been performed for a long time, and Dew also brought out some world premieres. His close collaboration with the dramaturge Paul Esterházy and the designer Gottfried Pilz began in Bielefeld .

From 1995 to 2001 Dew was general manager at Theater Dortmund , since 2004 he has headed the Staatstheater Darmstadt , where he was replaced by Karsten Wiegand in 2014.

Since the beginning of his directorship in Darmstadt, he has been particularly committed to performances from Carl Orff's work. These were: Antigonae , Oedipus der Tyrann , Die Kluge , Carmina Burana and, in January 2010, the world premiere of Orff's youth work Gisei from 1913 and De temporum fine comœdia from 1973.

John Dew was named Officier des ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2002 for his services to French opera . In addition, he received the Bielefeld silk weaver medal for his commitment to works that were banned during the Nazi era.
