Jean-Louis Martinoty (born January 20, 1946 in Étampes , † January 27, 2016 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French opera director and author .

Live and act

Martinoty first grew up in Algeria . He learned to play the cello . An encounter with Jean-Pierre Ponnelle sparked his interest in opera. His first work was Benjamin Britten's Midsummer Night 's Dream . Operas by Offenbach , Francesco Cavalli , Marc-Antoine Charpentier , Handel , Lully , Jean-Philippe Rameau , Cesti and Monteverdi followed , establishing his reputation as a director of baroque operas.

Later he also staged more recent repertoire, including Ariadne auf Naxos , Wagner's Ring , Carmen , Pelléas et Mélisande , but finally also operettas such as The Merry Widow and the Gypsy Baron .

Surprisingly, he became director of the Paris Opera in 1986 - succeeding Massimo Bogianckino , who was taking up his post as mayor of Florence at that time - Martinoty held this position until 1989.
