history

Located within the old walls of Châlons.

The Abbey of Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts was a male monastery of the Order of St. Benedict in the east of Chalons. According to some sources, the monastery was founded in the fifth century and according to others in 660 by Bishop Landebert.

In 1027 the founding of the abbey was confirmed by King Robert the Pious and the new church was consecrated in 1034 by Bishop Roger I of Chalons.

In 1114, the bishop of Châlons-en-Champagne, William of Champeaux, issued the abbot of the monastery of Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts Bertrand a title deed for the entire monastic property (“grande charte champenoise”), including the vineyards of today's cultivation area, and the like . a. Hautvillers , Cumières , Aÿ and Oger , Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs. This charter is considered the founding act of the Champagne wine-growing region. This document is now in the Archives départementales de la Marne.

Almost nothing is known about the construction history of the monastery buildings before the 18th century. In 1524, a sanctuary to Jupiter was reconstructed on the initiative of Abbé Pierre Lanisson, whose tombstone is preserved in the Notre-Dame-en-Vaux church . In 1713, those responsible for the diocese began an elaborate new construction of the monastery buildings and the church. A first wing was completed in 1718 and a second wing started in 1758. The church was demolished in 1772 but never rebuilt because of the revolution and the dissolution of the monastery. The remaining buildings were reused as an infantry and cavalry barracks and finally completely abandoned in 1836.

Many of the abbots of the monastery became bishops of Chalons . They appointed the pastors of Saint-Martin.
