history

Saint Winoc (also: Winnoc) first founded a Benedictine abbey in Wormhout in 685 , which was destroyed by the Normans. In 1022 Baldwin IV moved the monastery to Bergues on the Le Groenberg hill . The monastery buildings were destroyed by fire in 1083. The consecration of the new abbey church took place in 1133. In 1288, the construction of a larger choir began, which was completed in the 14th century. The monastery was also affected by a city fire in 1588. The monastery was closed during the French Revolution and most of the buildings were demolished in 1798.

The central part of the preserved ruins is the massive crossing tower of the former abbey church of St-Winoc from the 12th century. The tower, which collapsed in 1812 and was reconstructed on an octagonal floor plan in 1815, stands free. The classicistic portal, created around 1770, was moved to its current location in 1815.
